Specific Carbohydrate Diet

Arrangement of fresh vegetables, fish, eggs, fruits, and nuts.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is a therapeutic approach designed to address gut health by eliminating foods that are difficult to digest, particularly complex carbohydrates. This diet focuses on restricting disaccharides (double sugars) and polysaccharides (starches), allowing only monosaccharides (single sugars) found in fruits, honey, and non-starchy vegetables.

For children with autism or those with digestive challenges, complex carbohydrates and lactose can be especially problematic due to impaired digestion. When the small intestine’s mucosa is damaged, undigested carbohydrates and lactose can feed harmful microbes such as yeast and pathogenic bacteria, leading to gut dysbiosis, inflammation, and the release of toxins that can affect overall health and neurological function.

Traditionally, the SCD incorporates homemade yogurt made from high-quality milk that is fermented for 24 hours to remove lactose, providing beneficial probiotics. However, for children with autism, the use of dairy-based yogurt is not recommended, as dairy proteins may still contribute to inflammation and gut irritation, even when lactose is removed. Instead, non-dairy alternatives, such as coconut yogurt, fermented vegetables, or other plant-based fermented products, are better suited to support gut healing while avoiding the potential issues associated with dairy.

The diet emphasizes nutrient-rich, easily digestible foods, including non-starchy vegetables, fruits, unprocessed meats, and non-dairy fermented products, to help repair the gut lining, improve digestion, and enhance nutrient absorption.

The implementation of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, or any dietary intervention, is thoroughly discussed during biomedical consultations to ensure it is customized to the unique needs of each child. To assist with implementation, we have provided a comprehensive PDF guide detailing how to follow the SCD, including lists of foods to include and avoid.
